My Feelings on RE5 *EDIT*

THIS WILL MORE THEN LIKELY CONTAIN SPOILERS.

Now that that's out of the way; For the first question I've been getting:

No, I do not own a 360 or PS3 so I have not played the game myself. Before anyone starts freaking da fook out; I've pretty much been spoiled of the entire plot. This ranges from character personalities, storyline, whos-who, the ending, and of course gameplay, moves, etc. I'm also watching my friend Keith do somewhat of a playthrough, so I pretty much know all there is to know, just without holding the actual controller in my hand.

Now, for what I feel. To ease some minds, let's start with what I think is good about the game.

Just so no one gets me wrong, while I am a big fan of the 3rd person perspective (original RE game angels), this new over-the-shoulder view is ok too. The entire gameplay itself isn't something that I would consider to be a game-ruining factor. While it is new and slightly un-REish, I'm not that picky, because afterall, RE4 WAS fun. Also, the graphics in RE5 are really beautiful, there's no denying that. I'm glad they took away a merchant character, I personally found that kind of stupid from RE4 (as much as everyone loves him, they could of at least given him a backstory).

The partner system also seems pretty cool, especially the fact that it can be 2player. I always thought, even back during when I got RE2 that it would be cool to have multiplayer options. Though back then, I thought more along the line of separated at the beginning of the game (Leon & Claire) and having to exchange needed items, solve puzzles and such to help each other progress through, and of course fight off the undead, eventually side by side. Kinda similar to RE0 now that I think about it, minus the multiplayer option. But anyways, Yeah, that part of RE5 seemed cool. Although I hear that Sheva's AI when not a human player is... Not so competent. But that's just what I've heard from various people.

The last thing I like is somewhat bittersweet. The little loading screen tidbits of information they give about previous games. It's a nice, reminiscent visit for long-time players. In turn though, I realize they probably did it more so for new fans; people who know NOTHING about the old RE series, and have to be filled in with little paragraphs of info. Well, at least they learn SOMETHING about it, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Now on to what everyone's probably been wanting to hear and argue with: What I dislike and/or HATE WITH THE BOWELS OF MY SOUUUUL... About RE5.

Where the hell do I begin? How about the beginning? Opening scene, immediately showing Jill's grave. PAUSE RIGHT THERE! One thing about this game that irritates me so much, is all this 'history' that they make up, and we know NOTHING about until right at that moment. It seems really shoved on and unfair in ways. That whole scene about Chris and Jill going to the (lawl) 2nd Spencer Estate to find Wesker? Come on now, am I really the only one who would of wanted to actually PLAY that in a game rather then just watch it in a fleeting flashback cutscene? That's something about both RE4 and RE5 that bugs me. Capcom's attempt to 'keep up with the times' has really put a damper on the timeline and storyline of RE. I'd still like the game if it took place back in 1998, or hell, even in the early 2000. They could still design a few things to look more modern, I don't think it would be that much of a stretch to make a few designing sacrifices? Not nearly as big a stretch as what they've already done with the series. So basically what I'm saying is: The jumps in time are really pulling this all down, in my opinion. And adding in all this 'history' and flashbacks, etc? If they're so deeply thought out and 'cannon', why couldn't they make an actual game about them? Having Jill vanish at the end of an RE game would be an amazing cliffhanger, and to have her return in a later RE with the backstory would have much more of an OMG JILL IS ALIVE! Impact rather then the sorry excuse slopped together in RE5.

The same thing goes for RE4. The beginning of that game shattered my soul. BTW LOL UMBRELLA ISH GONE! I felt my stomach drop. Granted yes, they made Umbrella Chronicles later on, but that game was more slopped together and hastily made then RE4 or RE5. That's a whoooole other story. To make it brief, I pretty much believe it was made to simply shut fans up about RE5, as well as the fans who complained about the HUGE GAP between RE:CV and RE4. But moving away from these spur-of-the-moment histories and stoylines?

Why don't they fill in the gaps of already started but never finished storylines? Or characters for that matter? If you sit and think, just how many unanswered questions does RE have still?

Where is:
Barry Burton? Rebecca Chambers? Billy Coen? Carlos Olivera? Sherry Birkin? Ark Thompson (lol)? Bruce & Fong Ling? Does Wesker, or some secret Agency still have Steve Burnside? Is he dead or was he really revived? What happened to the T Virus and G Virus? Wesker''s entire mission in Code Veronica was to obtain the T-Veronica Virus. It was made out to be one bad-ass mother-fuckin', rare virus. He got Steve, didn't he? He got a sample, right? So where did that story go to? Even if Steve did die for good, what about this all-powerful virus that was in him? I'm sure there's plenty more questions where those come from? So why can't Capcom at least answer SOME of those questions before just making up even more confusing bullshit?

I know some of the files in RE5 mention the viruses Wesker stole, as well as the fact WHY Umbrella set up in Africa to begin with. But from what I rememeber, Uroboros is made from Plagas and Progenitor virus (correct me if I'm wrong though). So where are all the others? It was a nice attempt to bring some nostalgia told old RE fans but... still is generally unanswered. Not to mention most of the nostalgia is brought back via files... besides Lickers actually, I think ALL old references are in files. I dunno, I know some of the older RE's do some file flashback... but damn, remember CV, the Mansion replica in the Arctic Base? I got chills. It was so cool. And seeing the R.P.D. station in RE3. Actual, physical visits to the past, that's good remeniscing.

RE4 and RE5 are just pathetic reaches at current events, in my opinion. Terrorism? Foreign countries? Sounds a little familiar if you ask me (war on Iraq lol?). Sure, I can understand Capcom wanting to sell out and give into a gameplay style and theme that?ll get them some cash off of brainless, trigger happy kids, sure. I just wonder why they had to pick the RE series to be the sacrificial lamb. As I earlier said, I'm up for new gameplay, it is fun and all. But changing the story like that for such obvious reasons is just mind boggling. Then again, it's not even the same writing team, so I guess it's not at fault of the original people. Hell, the original writer of RE himself shook his head in shame over the turn this series has taken? That's gotta say SOMETHING to you people XD

Moving on to more history butt-fucking... the Wesker thing. Hones-fuckin-ly. Les Infantes Terriblesese lefook? Wow. Wowwww. I could of sworn Wesker was just an ordinary human at first... a power-hungry douchebag with some smarts, but normal nonetheless. Til he injected the virus into himself, anyway. So he's part of some Umbrella experimantation, he didn't find out til Spencer told him in RE5 and... yeah. No kidding he didn't know. Because the creators of Resident Evil back in the day didn't even fucking know! DON'T YOU JUST LOVE SPUR OF THE MOMENT MADE UP HORSE SHIT! big grin!!!!!!!!! Just... the whole fact that Wesker was apparently raised in some Umbrella lab, with a bunch of other kids nabbed away from their parents... all named 'Wesker' and given some 'inner desire to seek out Spencer' really kills his character. It gives fan-girl-twats reason to be like AWW WHAT A SAD DISTURBED PAST! No, just no. Wesker is just a cold hearted bastard, fuck all this dramatic past bullshit. It really doesn't bother me that he died (possibly), but the final battle was a fucking joke. Sheva shooting a rocket? Bitch please. Fuck off already.

Also, let me make a comment about Spencer. The Spencer Estate. Something that's both haunted and mystified RE gamers since the beginning. Who is Spencer? Where is he hiding? When will our heroes find him and take him down? Well, it's all answered in RE5, but very, very, very SHITTILY. Hay guess what! He's in Africa. Guess what else?! He's got a cliche dream of 'purifying the planet'. Moonraker, anyone? Oh and guess what else, else?! Wesker already killed him in a flashback. Mystery solved, lol. That's just as bad as Umbrella being pre-destroyed. Fucking bullshit.

Ok, let's all take a breath and move to a calmer, but just as retarded topic. Sheva. I talked about the ability of 2player and AI already, but her as a character. Her personality so far seems kind of annoying, a little anyways. Like as soon as Chris tells her about what happened to Jill, she's all like I'LL BE YO PARTNER~~ and proceed to use the word 'partner' 400 more times throughout the game. And her backstory is almost identical to Angela's from RE Degeneration. LAWL BOOHOO UMBRELLA KILLED MAH FAMILY SO REVENGE TIME! We're all SO fucking sad for you, your story is truly moving. -_-! But personality aside, let's talk about her creation for a bit. Did anyone else notice in the early releases of RE5 gameplay? hmmm something's missing? Oh! Sheva isn't fucking there. That's strange... and yet there she is not long after the racist claims arose? So my theory is: A hastily created, pointless character just to ward off angry mobs. Sad, really. BeeTeeDubb, here's some proof:

I got plenty of other things that make my piss boil, to briefly name them: The advertisements for RE5, the sad little homage to the original RE, that was insult onto injury, the non-scary environment, recycled animations, a piss poor ending, the fact Jill is... Blonde? And many more. But I won't drone on and on about em, I've made all my bigger points. *EDIT* I know Jill is blonde cuase of her bullshit virus. But come on, when you were wee children playing RE1... Did you think the series would ever in a million years turn out this way? To mind control and other completely unrelated bullshit? Sigh. At least she can dye her hair back and what not.

So now, in conclusion, you can say that I'm not a 'true' for clinging onto the old games and not accepting the new. But with everything I've stated and feel, I don't see how I can NOT be appalled with the turn this series has taken. I'm not saying that people who DO like this game though aren't real fans, I'm sure there are quite a few who are hardcore old RE fans.. just.. I dunno, a little too easily pleased as long as Resident Evil is slapped on the title. And I've been hollered at a few times like OMFG Leggy, it's a game just shut up and enjoy it!1!!11? Well, I say this with all the power of my geeky nerdom and pride of it... It's more then a game to me! XD It's my favorite fucking game series ever, it's like... the ONE thing in life I'm a die-hard-core fan for. If you felt the one thing you were an uber-nerd fan for was slowly dying... you'd be upset too. I love RE not just for omg lol shoot zombehs!!! I love the plot, the storyline, the characters, the pairings, the old school gameplay, the cheesy lines, the history, everything! ....Until now, at least. But I'm sure you figured that part out.

So like.... Yeah. There's your answer.

Fuck.

I have to say, I agree with you almost 100% there. To be perfectly honest, the game felt more like I was playing gears of war or metal gear solid 4. Very rarely did I actually remember I was playing an RE game unless someone mentioned Jill or I saw Wesker's sunglasses.
The gameplay and such aside, I can tolerate. I understand the need to change, but I was thoroughly upset with how they handled the ending of the series. So many many things left unanswered or swept aside.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one who was frustrated with Jill becoming a friggin' blonde. : |

Sorry about all the question marks that were scattered throughout. I fixed the post. Also congrats to anyone else who actually reads this whole thing.

Holy shit! I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head! XD Ever since 4 came out I've been thinking about the series and where it has turned. Like you said, that everything is focused into the future and all the stuff that happened in the past and with the characters is vague and not properly explained. Same also goes for 5! Resident Evil 5 does the same exact thing! Crap that happened years ago in the series that isn't brought up clearly to show a better view on it! (More about how Umbrella was doing experiments in Africa, More about Tricell, More about BSAA and how Chris joined, etc ) Crap that is just thrown into the mix to make it like an action movie! Random ass bullshit! I can't really explain it the same way you did. I've been trying to put it all together but I guess you have done that for me XD I have been playing ever since I got the game and I will say this. Sure it's fun to shoot the crap out of crazy infected maniacs with machetes with your friends. With awesome graphics and stuff that makes the game "fun" for new players to the series. But whats a game without proper storyline and background, proper characters. and with more original ideas that don't come from recent games! Seriously!

i agree with you here leggy, now-a-days its all bout the action and non of the horror aspect which the japanese were ace for. its the same with silent hill : the homecoming, i personally havent played it but i heard its alot more action packed rather than having the classic and yet scary 'oh &^%$' moments..number 2 being the prime example :p

what i would rather see capcom do is to remake an older resident evil with the graphically game play of the next gen consoles, with maybe a extra bit of information here and there (same thing what they did with resi 1 for gamecube)

I personally think that resident evil 2 remade with the over the shoulder game play and graphics of hat of resi 5 would be great, instead of those las plagus, 28 day later sorta zombie...things.

but thats just my thoughts really, think ive ranted on long enough :3

I totally have to agree with you here, specially on the part where you mentioned Jill's death without some type of background to it. The game is still good but the story is crappy.

Totally agree with u from the trailers I already knew it was Jill helping Wesker-.- and yeah it wuda've been better if there was a game about that flashback so that u want to play this RE but oh well anyways.... blonde Jill... omg wtf!!! did they play the other RE games??? did they know she was redhaired???... and about Sheva's friend (boss, master w/e) isn't he sopoused to die first?? (black guy ALWAYS dies first xD I'm not racist though) also how come they can b so near lava... I understand Wesker he's superhuman but Sheva and Chris?? and Wesker swimming in lava!!! oh well...I enjoyed the game but aswell as you Leggy I prefer the old ones they got me scared sometimes... u know the frog like monster from RE1 and the hands that show up suddendly in RE2 or thecrazy monk chasing (that's how we call theTyrant)Claire =D.

then again maybe the Virus changes your hair blond aka
Angela-blond-
Wesker-blond-
William-blond-
Maybe its just some type of thing to come with becoming infected :o. Honestly Ive never seen the whole first footage of resident evil 5 I didnt know Sheva wasnt in there at first, although honestly spontaniously bringing in a character that has nothing to do with the story with a thrown in backround is a little lame. It would have been nice to have seen maybe Barry or Carlos come back or have made an appearance ^_^

I've read through your whole post and I must say I wholeheartedly disagree. I won't go into detail because it'll just lead to people having ago at me, but anyway. I think the game is miles better than Resi 4 and definetely is getting back into the RE feel. Sorry, but that's how I see it

Hmm. One one hand, I disagree with a few details. One, the fact that Umbrella Chronicle's itself was slopped together. This is mainly just a personal opion, but I did throughly enjoy the game. It also did tie stroyline's rather well together, and fill me in on a few things in the RE storyline I did wish to know, such as Rebecca's timeframe between RE0 and RE. Plus..well, to be honset, I also liked the music in the game. Odd reason, obviously, but still, did like it. Especially the music for the 'Nightmare' scenarios. But anway...RE5.

I have played RE4..and unfortuantely, I have yet to play this one as well. However, I have been tipped and read into gameplay, story, endings (I'm sure it has Chris suffering from...Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? I believe so. Anyhoo.)
And the Jill thing got me a bit puzzled. Her death, and the way the scene was handled was a bit poor. Let me say now, I have no hatred of the gamer's who enjoy the game, and nor do I heavily, heavily dislike it.

However. And this is a big however, as unfortunately, the way this ended, well honestly made me quite annoyed. For one, I did not like the fact that Wesker was now simply a success story from a bunch of 'Wesker babys' that were created. I actually found the quality most likeable in him for myself was mostly the fact he was simply a human who had become far more then the original template for humanity should have been.

While I'm on Wesker, I must say...his death? Pissed me off slightly. But again, this is simply down to the way it ended...two RPG's to the head, and then boom..one of the most oddly, yet fun baddies to watch over the course of the series, dead. Like that. And so, there, I'm a little annoyed. I can't really look at Umbrella Chronicle's in the same way, now that it's narrated by the same guy who will die so annoyingly in RE5. And that sucks. I liked UC. T.T...

Now, I looked over your blog, Mrs. Shadowleggy, and I reached the part on the missing people. Rebecca, Barry, Carlos, Billy, Ark (I have just approriated a copy of RE Survivor and will soon be indulging in some gameplay...good wishes to you Ark) Bruce and Fong, and of course, Sherry. And I feel sorry for them. I like Billy, Sherry, Ark (I have yet to play RE, but your representation of his moody, emo soul, dejected from the lacklustre response to RE Survivor, made me warm to him. Thank you.) and to be honset, I want to see what happened. I don't want them being consigned to the history waste bin. Then again, I had a soft spot for Brad Vickers, but hey, I felt empathy for him. However, I do wish Capcom had answered them...instead of killing Jill, turning her blonde, (which I must add, I have nothing against blonde characters per say..Sherry, Alexia, Ashley, heck, even Richard...all cool, all one's I like...but it's Jill. She should not be blonde. It..well...just don't feel right, I suppose.) and making her a Wesker puppet. Which is slightly aggrivating, to put it gently.

Now, until I touch the control's, I will not comment on the gameplay (though I have heard of Sheva's infamous AI behaviour, and have observed this through the IGN PLay Reveiw). So I will quickly move on. And say..well, sorry, RE, RE0, RE2 and RE3, are in my opinion, scarier. Not simply agrreing with you, b ut I prefer that style of gameplay. Like RE4's, but I just prefer it. It add's atmosphere (which RE5's distinctly lack...zombie's/'intelligent' enemies in bright daylight? Come on Capcom.) And after looking through other veiwers comments, yes, the Gears Of War style starts to come to my mind as well.

I've rambled on. I hope I made some okay points. That's for any one else, and you, Mrs. Shadow, to decide. And to be honest....I'm personally waiting for RE: The Darkside Chronicles more. And your vids made me want Sherry in RE5, as a by thought.

Thanks for listening.

But i DID here that RE6 is going to be a REboot of the series, like the originals, of course, this is only rumor but I wish it was true, I like the old Resident Evils (Jill Sandwich om nom nom) and i hope Capcom wakes up and smells the zombies.

Now I can honestly say i like the gameplay in the resident evil 4 (since i havent played 5) cause well over the shoulder and first person are types of games I like the most but I can honestly say what the hell is wrong with the storyline casue honestly in RE4 the zombies when I first fought them I'm like what the THERE SUPPOSE TO BE FRICKING ZOMBIES not brain-dead spainerds that still now how to use things as weapons so honestly it somewhat supports a theory I heard "As sequels to games come out the sequel becomes progressivly worse then the origanel" which honestly I've seen in some games and also WHY IN GOD'S NAME SI JILL DEAD WHOS BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT TO KILL HER cause she was one of my more favorite charecters. With that my comment is done.

As I said on deviant art, the game depends on how you look at it. Game wise it looks fun and new, and interesting. In RE standards, its not great. The fact that stories are cut up and changed in order to make it easier on the designers is horrible. Think of the game like a book. You have maybe 10 books in the series and you read about 7. You get to the 8th and thy changed all the past information to fill in the cracks. I'd be like WTF. Every point you made was a good one. They totally dropped the back stories (Except for Nicholai who did live due to the letter he wrote Alfred). But the fact that this happened doesn't surprise me. I think RE fans should petition to get the old writers back for a new game, and bring it back to the past, and fix all the story issues. CAPCOM kinda fucked over its fans on this one.

i totally agree with ur views on RE5 they do throw stuff out there and its like WTF!? not only that what really pisses me off is that capcom always says "we'll answer questions in the next resident evil" and they never do!! god forbid they have the final fantasy syndrome where they have resident evil six... thousand!!(not that i hate final fantasy just don't want that to happin)so what i say i probably overdoing this when i say it but if they make a resident evil 6 (and i think they should) they need to just end it once and for all tie up loose ends bring the xombies back with the ganados all the monsters too with all the charactors you know stuff like that to make it feel like its just about over like how metal gear 4 did when they tied up all their loose ends they also really need to bring the scary back keep the action but make it scary ya know like part 2 and finally fill in all the PHUCKING PLOT HOLES!!!!!!!!!

Wow, I never saw RE5 that way until reading this. Your absolutely right, the story in RE5 does seem slapped on. Oh well, but its still pretty good none the less. Well word has it RE6 will be a "reboot" to the series, let's just hope they bring back the horror theme back into it. And in my opinion, RE6 should be the last in the franchise! Enough RE games, I am a hardcore fan, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that RE is gonna eventually grow stale. They should reunite all RE characters that are still alive, ( even Ark Thompson ;D) and, just for fun, make Steve the villain, 'cause Wesker's dead...hopefully, I'm tired of his ass.. That'll end the series on a high note!!!
